The founder of the city of St. Petersburg

The city of St. Petersburg was founded in the early eighteenth century by Emperor Peter I. On 16 may 1703 on the mouth of the river Neva, Hare Island, designed by Peter, were laid the foundations of the fortress of Saints Peter and Paul. Around the fortress, on the marshy, the Tsar decided to create a whole new town, with a large port on the sea. The fledgling town received the name Peterburh which means the Holy City of Peter. From 1710 until 1918 St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia. This beautiful city built on islands and cut by a dense network of canals large and small hides a precious treasure, the Mendeleev Home Museum .

Where is the University

In the map traced the two diagonals, where they intersect is the University and the Mendeleev Home Museum.

An Italian architect

Commissioned by Peter I in 1724, Italian architect Domenico Trezzini, built on the tip of the island complex of twelve colleges (1722-1742), where the Emperor moved the entire bureaucracy. The separate entrances for various ministers were the symbol of their independence, while the unique façade, which connected the 12 buildings as if they were a single complex, had to represent unity of purpose.Today the 12 colleges are part of the University, situated on the banks of the Neva River.

 Domenico Trezzini , architect italian (1670 – 1734)

The Italian architect Domenico Trezzini (1670 – 1734) also designed the Peter and Paul Fortress (the Citadel of Saint Petersburg), by order of Peter the Great. The city of St. Petersburg was built in late Baroque style , the imprint given by Trezzini.

A close friend and colleague of D.I. Mendeleev: Alexander Borodin

The famous Russian composer Alexander Borodin (1833-1887) not only excelled in music, but he was a great chemist. He was a colleague and friend of Mendellev.

Mendeleev Home Museum

And it is here, on the street called now Mendeleevskaya liniya, that is located the Museum  and the archive of Mendeleev. The Museum has existed since 1911. It opened four years after the death of Mendeleev. It was originally an apartment located on the ground floor of the University, at the side of the entrance. The first tenant of this apartment was the teacher of Mendeleev, Russian chemist Lou Voskresensky, a disciple of Liebig. Voskresensky is called the great father of Russian chemists.  He was the founder of the most famous school of chemical research. After 1866, he left for Ukraine in Voskresensky and Mendeleev, is nominated in the same period (1865) Professor at the University of St. Petersburg. As Professor took up residence in the apartment (Nov 1866). He lived and worked there from 1866 until 1890 with his second wife Anna Popova – Mendeleeva.
